The Free Label Releases New Song “Shine” featuring Braxton Cook
Toronto-based alt-pop party band The Free Label, consisting of Josh Daniel (vocals), Malik Mungo (guitar), Cole Mendez (keyboards), Jacob Thompson (keytar), Mathew Fantini (bass), and Jason Martin (drums), teamed up with American alto saxophonist Braxton Cook to release a new song “Shine” on May 18, 2023.
The song will appear on their debut album, which is expected to be released in 2024.
The track was written by Braxton Cook, Mathew Fantini, Malik Mungo. Rodney Mendez, Jacob Thompson, Jason Martin and Joshua Tsakas.
The band said of the song, “We wanted to write something along the lines of 'Shining Star' by Earth Wind and Fire but with an RnB twist - so, 'Shine' was born. With our references to luxury and confidence, we wanted to reinforce the message of self-assurance and celebrating your own brilliance.”
They added, “'Shine' is also a special tribute to the exceptional brilliance of mothers. We hope every mom felt valued and appreciated this past Mother's Day. We hope our music makes you move!”- The band shared on social media, For us as musicians, “'Shine' represents a new level of creative and artistic expression and a big part of that is of course the collaboration with the brilliant saxophonist and producer Braxton Cook. All of us have been deeply influenced by his sound for years, especially his album with Butcher Brown was something we were all listening to when the band formed - such intricate, soulful music with a groove that smacks so hard you want to turn the other cheek. That level of musical communion was something we dreamed of.”
They continued, “Six years later we're in the studio finishing up the outro for Shine and Josh said 'you know what'd go crazy on this…a Braxton Cook solo'. So we reached out to bro and the rest is history.” -
