Erin LeCount Premieres New Song “808 HYMN” on BBC Radio 1
London-based singer-songwriter Erin LeCount premiered a new song “808 HYMN” on BBC Radio 1's Future Pop with Maia Beth.
The song is her first music since the 5-track EP “I Am Digital, I Am Divine”, which was released back in April.
It was written and produced by Erin LeCount.
The accompanying music video was directed by Sam Taylor-Edwards.
Erin LeCount said of the song, “This song was born whilst walking home alone in the dark wearing heavy glitter and my favourite clothes, thinking about the question 'what were you wearing?' My heart beating so heavy it felt like an 808 through my body. The feeling i was being followed. I started wondering when the shift happens in our lives that we no longer believe the moon is following us home but something much darker. wondering if divine intervention would intervene if it came down to it.”- She continued, “Keys between fists. bass that sounds like a helicopter above your head. heavy breathing. relentless synth arp. a marching band playing your funeral hymn in the middle of the night getting more warped like a bad dream. A tempo to run for your life to. Every piece of this song was a choice I went over and over and cared about so much. It's my proudest work yet.”
She added, “To be singing it every night on tour with you has been the greatest joy & hearing it fill those rooms, with you already learning the words is magical. I hope you love this one half as much as I do, there's lots of my heart and soul and fear and anger in it. but most of all love and solidarity with everyone who is looking over their shoulder making their way home each night.” -
She told Maia Beth about the song, “It came to life I was walking home from like a night out late last year. And so it was like winter, and it was dark, and I was in like, my little dress and glitter. Ad I thought I was being followed on my way home, which I wasn't. But the feeling was enough. And I was just thinking about, I got quite sentimental about it was thinking about when you're younger, and you think the moon is following you home, and at what point that kind of shifts, and you think it might be something else. And I just wanted to make a song that felt that urgent and felt the way that that feeling feels in your body. And it's like your heart is beating so fast, and that's what the drums feel like, and it's just this urgency to it, and the bass sounds like a helicopter over your head. And I just wanted to make it a movie scene, kind of in a song, and get that feeling across in the side of it.”
She continued, “It's like a real adrenaline, it's just a song. I mean, it's like, at the tempo that you run to as well, which, I mean, it's great for running, but in the instance it came from. It's a really special one to me. I've been doing it each night (live on the tour), and sort of each night. It's really sweet to see more and more people have learnt the words from videos the night before. But Brussels is the first place I'll be playing tonight where it's out, which is crazy.” - source : BBC Radio 1
