  • The Wombats Announces Extended Version of “Oh! The Ocean”, Premieres New Song “Holy Sugar” on BBC Radio 1

  • British alt-pop band The Wombats, consisting of Matthew Murphy (vocals/guitar), Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass), and Dan Haggis (drums), has announced an extended version of the sixth studio album “Oh! The Ocean” will be released on December 5, 2025.

The original version of the album was released back in February.
From the extended version, the band premiered a new song “Holy Sugar” on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
The track was written by Joe Janiak and Matthew Edward Murphy. Produced by The Wombats, Joe Janiak, and Mark Crew.

The band frontman Matthew Murphy said of the song, “Definitely a tune that has a bit more sweat and swagger to it. Felt like it was maybe time to bring a bit of dirt back to the table”.
  • He told Jack Saunders about the song, “It was written on a day where I kind of wasn't the best morning, and I decided that the only course of action to take was to drop the guitar down as low as possible.”

He continued, “I am massively re-inspired at the moment. And I saw Oasis at the Rose Bowl the other day, just as there seems to be something exciting happening about guitar music again. So I'm going to ride on the back of the coattails of that. I think I don't know. I'm just looking forward to getting cracking on the seventh album next year and seeing what happens. But I think tuning the guitars down is quite a fun idea for the next one.”

  • He added, “It's maybe more it sounds maybe more akin to the first album. Possibly there's a lot of live stuff happening on, happening in there. I mean I did manage to get another fruit into the lyrics, which I'm proud of. But I'm very proud of it, or kind of surprised it wasn't on the album. Maybe it wasn't supposed to be on there for a reason, and that's what I'm gonna go with.”

The extended version features 4 new songs and remixes. Matthew Murphy said, “We're doing kind of an extended version with four new songs on and I remix. It's actually really good.”
