World Surf League: Filipe Toledo Takes Back-to-Back Wins at Corona Open J-Bay
- The 6th stop on WSL Championship, Corona Open J-Bay witnessed Filipe Toledo (BRA) claimed back-to-back victories at Jeffreys Bay following last year.
This result marks he is taking hold of the Jeep Leader Jersey for the second time in his career, and his the second victory of the 2018 season.
He was a clear standout throughout the week, such as putting up five of the 10 highest heat totals. Especially, in the Semifinal, he earned 9.57 and 9.33 with a total of 18.90, nobody could stop him. "Toledo in the Semifinals -- that's probably the best I've ever seen anyone surf," said former World Champion Shaun Tomson.
Runner-up was Wade Carmichael (AUS), who defeated local hero Jordy Smith (ZAF) in the Semifinal and advanced to the Final following Oi Rio Pro.
Julian Wilson (AUS) finished 5th and moved down to 2nd place on the leaderboard behind Toledo by 3940 points.
After the Final, Filipe Toledo said;
"I'm excited. I like yellow. To be honest, I'm so tired right now. I was trying so hard to push through that heat but there were a few times that I just had to stop for a minute. I have so many crazy emotions. I feel like it's my turn now. Everything is clicking and feeling good. At this point I'll do whatever it takes to win the heat, whether that's running on the rocks or breaking my board. My plan was to come here and come out on top and I'm glad I was able to do that."
