MotoGP Austrian GP: Jorge Martin Takes Pole Position, Francesco Bagnaia Wins Sprint Race at Red Bull Ring
The Round 11 of MotoGP 2024, Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich took place at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria on August 17, 2024.
In Qualifying, Jorge Martin (Pramac Ducati) took his fifth pole position of the season with a new lap record 1'27.748s.
After suffering a significant cut on his thumb after falling in the shower on August 16th, he sucked up the pain to post the fastest time.
Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo) was 2nd position due to ran out of fuel late in the session. But he also broke the 1.28 minute mark, following Jorge Martin.
Marc Marquez (Gresini Ducati) took the 3rd position in the front row.
Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) got himself on the front row briefly, crashed at turn 3 on his final run in Q2, finally was 4th.
Following Aleix Espargaro, Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM) and Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing) completed row two.
Fabio di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) dislocated his left shoulder in an accident on Friday and will withdraw the race of the weekend.
In the Sprint Race, Francesco Bagnaia took his third victory of 2024 Sprint Race, following Italian GP and Dutch TT.
Poleman Jorge Martin ran straight on at the chicane after a huge stoppie while trying to keep Francesco Bagnaia at bay on lap 2 and awarded a long lap penalty. Finally, he finished in 2nd place.
This result marks Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin tied at the top of Championship.
Aleix Espargaro took 3rd place after Marc Marquez, who was running 3rd, crashed out at Turn 3 on lap 10.
Silverstone winner Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo) ran wide on lap one and fought back to 4t place ahead of Jack Miller (ed Bull KTM).
Franco Morbidelli (Prima Pramac Racing) was 6th from Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM) and Marco Bezzecchi (VR46 Ducati) while Wildcard Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM) snatched the final point on offer in 9th.- Jorge Martin said, “While riding, it's okay. I struggle to put well the [ride height] device, maybe. This is the main issue, but it's not a big problem. On the start, it's a big problem. I lost two positions - normally I start quite well, but I don't have a good feeling with the clutch. It's what it is, hopefully I can improve tomorrow and at least have that first position at the beginning of the race. I think I could have done a bit better in the race without that penalty. I think it's fair because it's written in the regulations, but I think it should be reviewed because I enter the shortcut in first position and I exit in second, so for sure I lost some time. I think it will be a much better show without the long lap because I had something to try. I was really close to Pecco, and we could see the first two laps were amazing. I really enjoyed that. The pace [compared to Bagnaia] is similar, I think. For sure after the long lap I had nothing to gain, so I was just trying to finish the race. But at the beginning I felt strong, I felt he was really close, he wasn't pulling away. I think tomorrow we can play our game, we can battle with him and hopefully we can at least stay with him until the end, and then let's see what happens.”
Francesco Bagnaia said, “It was very fun. I enjoyed a lot, Jorge [Martin] was braking very hard, but I tried everything to be leading. As soon as he went wide I understand that he compromised his race because as soon as we finished the lap I saw that he didn't lose one second. From that moment, I tried to be as patient as possible and as consistent as possible with the rear tyre. I think I did a really good job in the race, also to understand something for tomorrow. If you are behind after two or three laps you can start having some issues with the pressure. It was too important to be leading. More in this track because the temperature is very hot and we have to go with the medium- a tyre that is not hard enough for the conditions, but is better than the hard. So, it's a bit critical, but it's the same for everybody. Honestly, I was controlling well. I was just trying different maps for tomorrow's race. I saw that he closed the gap a bit, he closed three tenths, but as soon as I saw it I just tried to push again, and he crashed. I didn't have any thoughts to fight with Marc [Marquez] today.”
