MARIS Releases New Song “Mary + I”
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter MARIS released a new song “Mary + I” on May 23, 2025.
The song follows the collaborative song Give Me A Sign featuring Caroline Kingsbury, which was released back in March.
The track captures a transformative summer of cannabis, celibacy, and radical self-discovery.
It was written by Cooper James Holzman, Dylan Sheffield Bauld, and Maris Kathleen Ward. Produced by Maris WardDylan Bauld and Cooper Holzman.
“Mary + I' started as an homage to weed and celibacy, viewing it in almost a cynical, panicky way,” MARIS said of the song. “But then I started to get really into yoga and meditation, and doing those things on a gummy changed my life. I had to slow down, breathe, and walk myself through anxiety. There's a line 'lock me in like a nun, 'cause lately I fuck like a loser,' and this was coming from my genuine concern about the fact that I was so uninterested in sex.”- She continued, “All I wanted to do every night was get stoned and journal and meditate. Although I had a lot of anxiety about not having sex for literally 4 months or something, I also went on such a deep journey into myself and my spirituality. I feel like I when I came back to my sexuality, I was a new person.”
She added, “During all of this spiritual exploration, I became familiar with Mary Magdalene, and started to study her gospel from a book my friend Izzy gave to me. I learned about the god within myself, and within every atom on earth, and I'll never forget the celibacy and cannabis filled liberation of that stoner summer.” -
She shared on social media, “I made this song with unbelievable talents Dylan Sheffield Bauld and Cooper James Holzman last year, and it was a spiritual experience. She gave me a place to put and analyze feelings I have sometimes of shame, surrounding my sexuality and my own pleasure! She is the Pop Documentation of a summer I spent stoned and celibate and where I found myself and my god again (more on this soon). I'm so grateful she's in the world! And think I may have smiled the entire time I was writing (and the rewriting) the lyric. I HOPE YOU LOVE IT!!!”
