Meklit Announces New Album “A Piece of Infinity”, Shares New Song “Tizita” featuring Brandee Younger
San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Meklit has announced her upcoming fourth studio album “A Piece of Infinity” on September 26, 2025.
This marks her first album in eight years since the 2017 album “When the People Move, the Music Moves Too”.
It is the first release under her new label Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.
From the album, she released a new song “Tizita” on July 22, 2025.
On the track, she teamed up with American harpist Brandee Younger.
The song is accompanied by a music video, which was directed by Sophiyaa Nayar.
It was written by Kibrom Birhane, Meklit, and Sam Bevan. Produced by Meklit and Sam Bevan.
Meklit said of the song, “'Tizita' is one of the most beloved traditional song forms of Ethiopia, expressing passionate longing and nostalgia. There have been so many versions of 'Tizita,' and I have been brewing mine for nearly a decade. I nurtured it by singing softly to myself while driving, walking, and living life. I knew this album would be the place for my 'Tizita' to bloom. Thanks to the brilliant Brandee Younger for bringing the glittering dreaminess of the harp to this much-loved tune.”
Meklit said of the video, “The flower heads are like seeing through a memory itself or through a dream where emotion and sensation are in charge, and we let go of the logic of everyday life.”- The new album comprises 9 tracks, featuring guest appearances from Brandee Younger and Camille Thurman.
Every song on the album has roots in traditional Ethiopian folk music, and Meklit's process of arranging and recording the album's nine tracks included researching, translating, re-composing, and juxtaposing a selection of folk songs into reimagined contemporary works.
The album was recorded entirely at the Bay Area's Women's Audio Mission. -
