Canadian indie rock band TOPS' lead singer Jane Penny will release her debut solo EP “Surfacing” this Friday (April 5th).
From the EP, she released the third and final promotional single “Beautiful Ordinary” on April 2, 2024.
The track was written and produced by Jane Penny, with production by Patrick Holland.
“This song is about being afraid to lose someone that you love,” Penny said in a statement. “When I listen to it now it sounds like an anthem for codependency. At that time I thought that the more afraid you are to lose someone, the stronger your love was. I've come to see those fears in a different way, but I know they were very real emotions. I love dark 80s music, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys etc., and I thought that 80s vibe suited a song about such angsty juvenile feelings.”- The debut EP comprises a 7-track, written and produced by Jane Penny, with production by Patrick Holland.
The EP was made over the course of mostly-isolated years as Jane Penny acted as caretaker for her bed-ridden partner Better Person (Adam Byczkowski), found themselves ill with long COVID. -
