  • CHVRCHES Returns With New Song “Over”

  • Scottish synth-pop band CHVRCHES, consisting of Lauren Mayberry (vocals), Iain Cook (synthesizers) and Martin Doherty (synthesizers), returned with a new song “Over” on February 24, 2023.

The song is their first music since the 2021 album “Screen Violence”.
Also, it is the first single under their new label Island Records and and EMI Records.
The band said, “A brief reprieve from the horrors of CHV4, we finished a new song.”
It was written by Iain Cook, Martin Doherty, Lauren Mayberry, Oscar Holter, and Matthew Koma. Produced by Oscar Holter.
The accompanying music video was directed by Leah Barylsky.
The band said of the song, “'Over' is a song that we wrote with Oscar Holter, a producer we really respect and admire. Normally we collect songs over the course of months (or years!) until we have an album's worth of material, but this time we just wanted to release something we were excited about and give the fans something new to mark the end of the 'Screen Violence' era, and the start of whatever the next CHVRCHES chapter might be.”

Lauren Mayberry told KROQ about lyrics, “I feel like we rewrote the lyrics for this so many times, because we suffered deeply to get to this point, but I guess I like that the feel of the sonics of the song felt like it wanted something more classic in that way so it was nice to write more of kind of like narrative type thing than what would normally do.”
She continued, “I think I was making it too gloomy, maybe. There's the first administration of it well that's more in the kind of screen violence tone sort of and then we were talking about it. And everyone was like if we need to have a lyric in it about drinking bleach, I don't know think we have to that I was like but it's I good, no, no?, but not for that song maybe. So I feel like we ended up, but I guess that's how it goes sometimes it'll happen really quickly and then other times you're like you have to rework something a few times so you get the correct fit, I think.”
