  • Kristen Rae Bowden Returns With New Song “Hard to Love”

  • Charlottesville-based singer-songwriter Kristen Rae Bowden returned with a new song “Hard to Love” on February 14, 2023.

The song is her first music in four years since the 2019 debut album “Language & Mirrors”.
She recorded the song with Joe Lawlor (guitar), Dane Alderson (bass), Nate Brown (drums), and Tevis Marshall (organ) at Haunted Hollow Studio in Charlottesville, Virginia.
The track expresses the cynicism that shelters a broken heart after a breakup. Sparsely and with a hint of humor, she writes of her impulse to push new lovers away.
She wrote the song during a bout of insomnia. Kristen Rae Bowden said, “I was in the beginning stages of a new romantic relationship and for the first time in my life I couldn't truly start fresh; I felt jaded, worried, and reserved. Part of me was not willing to jump in with both feet, as the imaginary safety net I'd felt in my twenties had somehow evaporated. For the first time I knew, there are some things from which I can't fully bounce back.”
  • On the accompanying music video, she teamed up with award-winning animator Pat Bradley.
Inspired by a hard earned fear of romantic intimacy, the video takes us through a metaphorical story told through transforming electric lines on a black background. A girl turns her own heart into a fortress of solitude, becoming trapped in the process.
Glowing and hallucinatory, the video is a beautiful expression of the bravery it requires to be vulnerable, and the inherent risks we must take to fully experience the heartbeat of life.
