London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Matt Cooper, aka Outside returned with a new EP “A New Beginning” on November 2, 2022.
It is his first project in 21 years since the 2001 album “Out Of The Dark”.
The EP was released ahead of his upcoming sixth studio album “Almost Out”, which is expected to be released in Spring 2023 via Dorado Records.
The EP comprises 4-track, where Matt Cooper played his first instrument, drums, as well as keyboards and most of the instruments.
He recorded and completed the EP during the 2020 lockdown and creatively assisted with co-producer Valentina Pahor, in London and Portugal.
The new EP juxtaposes the percussive and the melancholy to hauntingly beautiful effect, drawing on 20 years in the company of soul and jazz legends, and adding a dash of Philip Glass and Steve Reich minimalism.
“I've evolved the mixture of modern and retro,” Matt Cooper said of the EP. “That's the Outside sound.”- The 1st track “A New Beginning” was written and produced by Matt Cooper.
It is slick downtempo beats and keys meet Lo-Fi vibes and basslines with seamless touches of jazz instrumentation.
The 2nd track “Searching Finding” was written by Matt Cooper, Cleveland Watkiss, Vancho Manilovich and Francisco Sales. Produced by Matt Cooper.
It is a minimalist glitchy, electronic soundscape that acts as a backdrop to the hauntingly emotive slide guitar of Francesco Sales and Cooper's lush keys.
The 3rd track “Navigating” was written by Matt Cooper and Nichol Thomson. Produced by Matt Cooper, Nichol Thomson, and James Knight.
It is a cinematic feast for the ears, with a deeply yearning, searching groove.
The 4th track “Flying High” was written by Matt Cooper and Nichol Thomson. Produced by Matt Cooper, Nichol Thomson, and James Knight.
