Joy Crookes Announces Debut Album “Skin”, Shares Title Track
- British singer-songwriter Joy Crookes announced her upcoming debut album “Skin” would be released on October 15, 2021.
From the album, she released the title track on August 6th.
It was written by Joy Crookes, DANNY CASIO and Matt Maltese. Produced by Blue May.
“Out of all the songs I have ever written I think "Skin" is the most important to me,” Joy Crookes said of the song. “It is simple musically and lyrically, the lyrics are literal and self explanatory: 'The skin that you're given, was made to be lived in. You've got a life, you've got a life, worth living'.”
She added, “It exists for anyone who needs reassurance and hope. Mental health is something everyone has to deal with to varying degrees, and in particular the last 18 months have taken their toll. I wrote this song for a loved one last year who was at a stage where he thought his life was no longer worth living. I hope the song offers something to everyone battling with their demons and the people around them who are supporting them.”
- The debut album comprises of 13-track, produced by Barney Lister, Blue May, Joy Crookes and Tev'n.
She said of the album, “This is the proudest work I have made to date. It is an auto biographical body of work, the album consists of songs I wrote when I was 15 up until 22. This is an album about my identity. I was fortunate enough to make this first album with the exceptionally talented producer Blue May. A big, big thanks to Tk Nhlumayo, Barney Lister, Sam Beste, Jonny Lattimer, Eg White and Leon Vynehall for some co/ad production too. I sat across the whole production process and I'm proud to say I've been credited with Blue as a co executive producer. This means the world to me as I have always been a part of every process of my music and it feels very special to be recognised for it.”
She continued, “The legend Spike Stent mixed several of the tracks on the album and the rest was done by Blue May. Thank you to the inimitable Carlota Guerrero, who shot the album cover and all the artworks. That's just to name a few, so many talented people have contributed to the album and I give big thanks. The word skin massively resonates with me as biologically it is one of the strongest parts of our bodies, however socially and externally it is often used against us. This juxtaposition is grappled with throughout the album; lyrically my album is effectively a collection of stories that I cannot wait for you to hear.”
