Following Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Men's Championship Tour #1 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast kicked off at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on March 16, 2017.
Wave conditions are better than yesterday, in four-to five foot (1 - 1.5 metre).
The former World Champ Gabriel Medina was injured his knee on Heat 4. He tried an aerial, but failed landing. Medical staff on site immediately attended to Medina at the conclusion of his heat. Reports later stated that he would surf on.
3-time World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) came back to competition in this event. He competed against 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) and Jeremy Flores (FRA) on Heat 7. Jeremy Flores earned 13.13 before the conclusion of the heat, everyone thought he won, but Mick Fanning received 7.17 at his last riding 30 seconds remaining. Finally, Mick Fanning took the win with 13.27, advanced to Round 3.
Defending champion of this event Matt Wilkinson (AUS), current world champion John John Florence (HAW), former world champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Adriano de Souza (BRA) advanced directly to Round 3.
Local heroes Owen Wright (AUS) and Mikey Wright (AUS) participated in this event as the wild cards. Their sister is current world champion Tyler Wright.
WSL Deputy Commissioner Renato Hickel said about Gabriel Medina;
“We’ve checked in with Gabriel (Medina), who is icing his knee and resting. He intends to compete in Round 3 when competition recommences."
