- Sam Valdez grew up in Nevada and started her music career in Los Angeles. Her sounds open and vast, reminiscent of her Nevada desert upbringing.
Last November, she told Vents Magazine, "Growing up I never really connected to where I was from or felt much comfort from it. In the last couple of years before I moved to LA I started taking walks out in the desert, away from the city and then I started feeling much more drawn to it. It’s so vast and there’s this wonderful sense of solitude that I really love."
Also, her music is influenced from Angel Olsen. "I’m such a huge Angel Olsen fan. There’s a haunting quality about her voice and writing. When I was first starting off singing I remember feeling pressured to have a higher and airy quality to my voice. Angel Olsen was the first artist I got into that had this low, broad vocal quality that made me feel more comfortable to sing in my natural deeper tone of voice," she said.
