- The Roots and Bilal Perform “It Ain't Fair” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon
- American hip hop group The Roots and American singer-songwriter Bilal appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where they performed "It Ain't Fair". The song "It Ain't Fair" is taken from "Detroit" soundtrack.
The film "Detroit" is based on the Algiers Motel incident during Detroit's 1967 12th Street Riot. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, starring John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jason Mitchell, John Krasinski and Anthony Mackie. The film was released a limited theatrical on July 28, 2017.
In addition to The Roots and Bilal, the soundtrack features The Dramatics, Jerry Williams, Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell, Brenda Holloway, James Newton Howard, The Devotions, Lee Rogers, Algee Smith, The Elgins and John Coltrane.
The Roots drummer Questlove described about the film;
"This song is the slow burning fire inside all of our souls. Watching the movie [Detroit] clearly shows that life in 1967 isn't that much different in 2017 or 1897 for that matter. We wanted to hit many a bird with one stone: Humanize the pain, confusion and sadness. But also express the overdue anger. Not only to the powers that be but also to those on the sideline that can afford to turn the other way because it doesn't effect them at the moment"
The Algiers Motel Incident occurred in Detroit, Michigan, United States, during the night of July 25–26, 1967 during the racially charged 12th Street Riot. At the Algiers Motel, approximately one mile east of where the riots began, three teenage civilians, all of them black, were beaten and killed by police.
Nine others, two white females and seven black males, were badly beaten and humiliated by members of a riot task force composed of the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and the Michigan Army National Guard, and a private security guard.
