  • Rolling Stones Drummer Charlie Watts Dies at 80

  • British drummer, and the Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts died in a London hospital at the age of 80 on August 24, 2021.


    His death was announced in a statement from the Rolling Stones' publicist, which described him as “a cherished husband, father and grandfather” and "one of the greatest drummers of his generation”.
    It added, “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today [Tuesday] surrounded by his family. We kindly request the privacy of his family, band members and close friends is respected at this difficult time.”
    He had been nearly 60 years as a drummer with the Rolling Stones.
    He joined in the Rolling Stones in 1963 and had played drums on all of the Rolling Stones' 30 albums and on every one of their tours.
    But he is also better known as a Jazz drummer, in addition to his work with the Rolling Stones, he had released 10 Jazz albums, including The Charlie Watts Orchestra, The Charlie Watts-Jim Keltner Project, The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie and Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band.
    Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Elton John were among the other stars from the world of rock to remember Charlie Watts.
    Sir Paul McCartney described Watts as “a lovely guy” and “a fantastic drummer” who was “steady as a rock”.
    Sir Ringo Starr said on Twitter: “God bless Charlie Watts we're going to miss you man.”
    Sir Elton John wrote on Twitter: “A very sad day. Charlie Watts was the ultimate drummer. The most stylish of men, and such brilliant company.”
