  • Emily James Releases New Song “Underdog”

  • New York-based singer-songwriter Emily James will release her upcoming EP “Summer Nostalgia” on August 15, 2025.

The EP is her first project since the 2024 EP “The aLtErNaTeS, Pt. 2”.
From the EP, she unveiled a new song “Underdog” on May 30, 2025.
The song is the second single off of the EP, following “Under the Influence” released in April.
The track exhibits the tensions in a relationship and the turbulence rising to the surface.
It was written by Emily Dieffenbach, and Anu Pillai, who also produced the track.
The accompanying music video was directed by Ryan Blewett.

Emily James said of the song, “I see it as a tumultuous high school relationship where immaturity and incompatibility are bubbling up. The sound of 'Underdog' really leans into that teenage angst and the release of all the frustrations you've been trying to bury. This is the turning point of Summer Nostalgia.”
  • The new EP comprises 6 tracks and is her most intimate project yet.
Inspiration for the EP poured out as she prepared to leave Los Angeles where she had lived for the past seven years, to spend some time writing and recording in London.

Emily James said of the EP, “I missed the changing of seasons. I like to be able to move around on my own. There are a lot of similarities between New York and London, and having spent time there made me even more nostalgic for New York. This EP is about reflecting on your past, growing up, and reconnecting with those roots.”

  • She added, “It felt like I was watching a movie. You zoom into these little vignettes, and then you'll zoom out a little bit to the present day, and then zoom back in. It felt like something I'd never done before in terms of having this interweaving timeline and flickering between present and the past, with memories coming in and out.”

She shared on social media, “This EP is about first love; whether that be a person or a place, and how that experience shapes who we are and how we see the world. It's a love letter to my roots, and will be told in the context of a love story that unfolds over the course of 6 songs.”
