Bastille, Freya Ridings & Hans Zimmer Perform “Pompeii MMXXIII” at The Earthshot Prize 2023
British pop rock band Bastille, British singer-songwriter Freya Ridings, and German composer Hans Zimmer performed “Pompeii MMXXIII” at The Earthshot Prize 2023 in Singapore on November 12, 2023.
The song is a new version of Bastille's 2013 smash hit song “Pompeii”.
The Earthshot Prize is a global environmental award that is rewarded to five winners each year for their contributions towards environmentalism. Each winner receives a grant of £1 million to continue their environmental work.
The winners are selected by the Earthshot Prize Council, which includes the awards founders Prince William and David Attenborough.
This year, The Earthshot Prize was in Singapore for a week-long (November 6-12) celebration of innovation and impact. The ceremony took place at the Mediacorp Theatre.
Bastille said, “Had an amazing time at The Earthshot Prize 2023. So incredible to hear about all the incredible projects and work that all the finalists are doing to try and have a positive impact. Very surreal getting to play a special performance of this new version of Pompeii as part of the show.”- This year, Bastille and Hans Zimmer worked together for BBC “Planet Earth III”. They released a new version of “Pompeii” for the program back in September.
Bastille's frontman Dan Smith said about working with Hans Zimmer, “So I went for a look around bleeding fingers which is Hans' company. It's his studio complex in LA, where him and a bunch of other composer all work. I went for a look around earlier in the year and Russ who helps Hans run the place. He, as we were looking through these studios and seeing all these amazing different composers working on all these amazing projects. He turned to me and was like 'I've been thinking, you know, whether you'd be up for doing a little bit on work on Planet Earth III?' Obviously I was like trying to be normal about it but in my mind I was like...this is f***ing amazing! and then to him was like...'Yeah, yeah sure, I'll be up for that.'” - source : The Earthshot Prize 2023
