Gretel Hänlyn Premieres New Song “War With America” on BBC Radio 1
London-based singer-songwriter Maddy Haenlein, aka Gretel Hänlyn premiered a new song “War With America” on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo.
The song is her first single since her latest EP “Head of the Love Club”, which was released back in March.
The track was written by Madeleine Haenlein, Rebecca Jones, Alexander Headford, and Lloyd Wayne Whittle. Produced by Charlie Andrew.
Gretel Hänlyn told Clara Amfo about the song, “Why this tune? Because I think this was the one that was best fit for a single release. So do to be completely honest. And why now? Because I didn't want to start releasing an album yet and I needed to pass some time. I'm thought I'd release this but it actually ended up being my favorite song that I've ever made actually, and it ended up being quite a lot more work than I thought it would be. I just chucked something out, but I ended up being so many different versions and like revised versions of this song.”
- She continued, “I actually the writing of it was bookended. So I started writing it and went to America, and then came back and finished it with this new perspective after having stayed in LA for quite a long time with my friend. And I was a bit of an emotional wreck out there and hadn't been away from home for such a long time or like ever actually. And it was a bit of a coming of age moment. And there was a lot of imposter syndrome and I came home and came back to Heathrow Airport, and was like, 'What the hell just happened' and finally finished this song that I've been stumped on for months.”
Gretel Hänlyn said of the song in a statement, “‘War With America’ is about my trip to LA this year. I was 20, had never been away from home and went away for six weeks to stay with friends and write music out there... It was like being in high school, desperately wishing I could just be part of the cool kid's herd. I knew I wanted to belt the chorus, after so many suffocating and internalising social interactions I just needed to be able to scream something out.”
She embarks on her headline tour in the UK, Europe and North America this fall. The tour kicks off at Paradiso in Amsterdam, NE on October 23 and will conclude at Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles, CA on November 15, 2023, with a total of 14 shows.
