He explained each song in the interviews with Capital FM and Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show.
  • “Golden”:
“'Golden', we wrote on day two of being in Shangri-La […] as soon as we’d done it, it was like, ‘Oh, this is track one’. I used to drive from here to the studio and listen to it. “Golden” was like the perfect PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) song. It’s like driving down the coast, that is what the song is for. It feels so Malibu to me.”

    “Watermelon Sugar”:
“Well the hardest song to finish was “Watermelon Sugar.” We wrote it in a day and then it took about a year to finish…Which was very frustrating but uh, happy with it now.”

    “Adore You”:
“It’s about that initial infatuation stage when you get that heavy feeling of just bliss, like a blissful, very joyous connection with someone. We wrote this in a day, we just had so much fun making it. They’re usually the ones that end up kind of working the best, the ones where everyone’s having fun making it […] they kind of just write themselves. It was definitely a good experience, making this song, very excited to have it out.”

    “Lights Up”:
“I mean, for me, I think, the song is about, like, you know, freedom and, I guess, self-reflection, self-discovery … I guess a couple things that I’d kind of thought about and, I guess, wrestled with a little bit of the last couple of years and then, I think, the song’s kind of about me just accepting those things.”

    “Cherry”:
“The night that I wrote it, everyone had left the studio, it was me, Tyler and Sammy, who is our engineer. […] You know, I have all these ideas about records that I want to make, and ‘I wanna make this record in 5 years, and I wanna make this record in 10 years’… and Tyler just said to me, ‘You just have to make the record that you wanna make right now, that’s it.’ So then we stayed up and wrote “Cherry” that night.”

    “Falling”:
“I was showering and he [Tom] was playing on the piano, and as I came out of the shower he was playing the “dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun” [chorus]. I went and stood next to him at the piano – just in a towel, we kinda just wrote the whole thing.”

    “Fine Line”:
“Wrote the song called “Fine Line”, wrote it very early on in the process, kind of felt like when I wrote it, it was always gonna be the last song on the album. It felt like it described to me the process of making it and how the album felt in terms of the different kinds of songs on it. It’s one of my favourite songs on the album.”
