Avril Lavigne Premieres New Music Video for “Head Above Water” and Performs on Jimmy Kimmel Live
- Canadian singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne unveiled a new music video for “Head Above Water” directed by Elliott Lester on her birthday.
Last week, she released the song for the first time in three years since her 2015 song “Fly“ for the Special Olympics.
The video shows a message of supporting individuals with Lyme disease. She founded The Avril Lavigne Foundation, because she had struggled to treatment with Lyme disease for years.
“Thank you for waiting so patiently as I fought through and still continue to fight, the battle of my lifetime,” she wrote on her website. “The first song I am choosing to release is called ‘Head Above Water.’ It is also the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life.”

She described how come the song in an interview with People magazine.
"One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die. My mum laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning," she revealed. "Under my breath, I prayed, ‘God, please help to keep my head above the water.’ In that moment, the songwriting of this album began, it was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on."
Before releasing the video, she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she performed the song. This marks the first time she has performed the song on TV.
