  • Chester Bennington, Linkin Park Singer, Dead at 41

  • Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington died of an apparent suicide by hanging Thursday morning, according to The Associated Press. Police in Palos Verdes Estates told in Los Angeles County, the singer's body had been discovered just before 9 a.m. The singer was 41.


    "Shortly after 9 a.m. this morning, we were notified by law enforcement of a death in Palos Verdes Estates," Brian Elias, chief of operations for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. "We responded to the scene and unfortunately confirmed that Mr. Chester Bennington was deceased at the scene."
    Elias added that the coroner's department is currently conducting a death investigation, with more information set for release Thursday afternoon.

    Bennington's bandmate Mike Shinoda tweeted, "Shocked and heartbroken, but it's true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one."
    Late night host Jimmy Kimmel wrote, "Chester was one of the kindest men I've had on my show. My heart breaks for his family and friends. He will be missed terribly."

    Chester Charles Bennington was best known as the frontman for Linkin Park. Before Linkin Park, he performed Sean Dowdell and Grey Daze in 1993. He joined in Linkin Park in 1999.
    As Linkin Park, he had released seven studio albums, five live albums, two compilation albums, two remix albums, three soundtrack albums, 12 video albums, 10 extended plays, 34 singles, 19 promotional singles, and 66 music videos. The band has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and won two Grammy Awards.
    He formed his own band, Dead by Sunrise, as a side project in 2005. The band released their debut album "Out of Ashes" in 2009.
    In 2013, he worked on new material with Stone Temple Pilots and formed their own record label, Play Pen. The band released the debut EP "High Rise".

    Bennington's death occurred on what would have been Chris Cornell's 53rd birthday. Bennington and Cornell were close friends, Chris Cornell had also died of suicide by hanging two months prior. Bennington sang Leonard Cohen's song "Hallelujah" at Cornell's funeral.
