- Official Trailer for Doug Liman's “American Made” Starring Tom Cruise
- Universal Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for "American Made" online. The film is directed by Doug Liman, starring Tom Cruise.
It is based a true story, in which a former TWA pilot Barry Seal who became a drug smuggler in the 1980s and was recruited later on by the DEA to provide intelligence.
In the film, Tom Cruise played Barry Seal.
Barry Seal had worked as a commercial airline pilot for TWA from 1966 until 1974. He was employed by the Medellín Cartel as a pilot and drug smuggler. He transported numerous shipments of cocaine from Colombia to the United States and earned as much as $500,000 per flight
He was arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison. But Seal approached the DEA and offered to cooperate with the government as an informant, he began working as a federal informant in March 1984.
Afterwards, he testified that Sandinista officials in Nicaragua brokering a cocaine deal with members of Colombia's Medellín Cartel. But he was shot to death by an assassin on February 19, 1986. Colombian assassins sent by the Medellín Cartel were apprehended while trying to leave Louisiana soon after Seal's murder.
American Made tells the story of Barry Seal (Tom Cruise), a TWA pilot who is recruited by the CIA to help counter the emerging communist threat in Central America. Seal's role in this major CIA covert operation led in turn to his involvement with the Medellin cartel, which ultimately embarrassed the Reagan White House after the Iran-Contra scandal became public.
