World Surf League: Carissa Moore & Griffin Colapinto Win Surf Ranch Pro Presented by 805 Beer
The 6th stop on the World Surf League 2023 Championship Tour, Surf Ranch Pro presented by 805 Beer took place at Lemoore, California, United States between May 27 and May 28, 2023.
The rules are different from other competitions, because this event is held in an artificial wave pool.
The Qualifying Round features four-surfer heats where each surfer gets two right waves and two left waves. The top right and top left scores are combined to create their total score.
First place from these heats advances to Finals Day, 4th place is eliminated, 2nd and 3rd place face off in Night Session.
In the Night Session, the 12 men and 6 women get just one left and one right to lock in their best single-wave score, then the top two men and one woman advance to Finals Day.
Finals Day features all head-to-head matchups, each surfer gets two rights and two lefts to lock in their best right and best left for the heat win.
On the Final Day, Carissa Moore (HAW) and Griffin Colapinto (USA) won Surf Ranch Pro, respectively.
For Carissa Moore, this result marks her second Surf Ranch Pro win and third CT event win of the season.
While, Griffin Colapinto took his first victory of 2023 and the first Surf Ranch Pro win. It is his first win since the 2022 Surf City El Salvador Pro.
- In Women's Final, Carissa Moore competed against Caroline Marks (USA), who made her second Finals appearance of the season.
Carissa Moore earned an excellent 8.60 and 7.93. While Caroline Marks got 7.50 and 7.93, but the scores were not enough to win. So, she went to the air for her final attempt on the 4th ride, but fell on the landing.
Finally, Carissa Moore claimed back-to-back wins of Surf Ranch Pro.
Carissa Moore said, “You can't wipe the smile off my face right now and to be sharing the podium with these amazing humans is an honor. I think all of us as athletes just want to perform to the best of our potential and I definitely think there was more for me to give out here. But, I felt happy and present, and that's what matters most to me. I didn't really imagine it would go quite this good and I'm just really happy. I have a lot of family and friends here, and watching all over the world, so I really appreciate all the love. It's a perfect wave, but it's really difficult to ride. It took a couple surfs to figure out the timing again and get to calm the nerves, but I just felt really good.”
In Men Final, Griffin Colapinto competed against the 2019 World Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA).
Griffin Colapinto started strong, posting an excellent 8.70 and backup 7.83.
While, Italo Ferreira earned 8.70 and backup of 8.13 and led the Heat.
But Griffin Colapinto got a near-perfect 9.70 on the third ride and made a comeback to win.
Griffin Colapinto said, “It means everything to win a CT in California, especially to win here because everyone gets the same opportunity and there's so much that goes into your physical ability. A lot of hard work went into this. I'm feeling really good and just so psyched, all my friends and family are here so to win with them here is just insane. That Final was so crazy and it's trippy to watch Italo's (Ferreira) waves and hope he fell so I'm just over the moon. I had no clue I was No. 1 until you told me and it's a crazy feeling being in the yellow jersey.”
