Devan Releases New Song “Without You”
- Toronto-based singer-songwriter Devan has released a new song “Without You” with accompanying music video.
The song is the second single after the release of the debut EP “Pink Noise”, following “Lie”.
She wrote the song with Jack Emblem and Jesse Gold. The video was directed and edited by Kyle Travis Young and Zen Turczyn.
“This song came out of a DM-slide from an ex,” Devan said of the song. “We had a brutal break up and I was pretty devastated by it at the time. Five years later, after I had moved on, he conveniently started messaging me saying he loves my music and is "so proud" of me. It came across as condescending, like he felt he could claim some sort of ownership over what I had accomplished.”
She continued, “'Without You' captures the immediate frustration that comes with an unexpected/unwelcomed message from someone who had hurt you… Yet then there's the elated realization that they don't have a hold on you anymore.”
- She explained of creating process, “We used the song's lyrical themes to guide the production. The first half of the chorus sounds distorted and angry, then the transition into the second half marks that moment of epiphany – the sounds are softer and rounder, the drums are bouncy and dancey, and the lyrics take on a different meaning even though they don't change.”
She added, “'Without You' is the sound of metamorphosis. It is encapsulated in the lyric, you're the one who said 'embrace it' 'til you saw me changing, which is undeniably auto-biographical.”
