San James Shares Latest Song “Otherwise” & Self-Titled EP
- Back in May, Canadian singer-songwriter San James released the second single of 2020 entitled “Otherwise” following “Make It Easier”.
The song was written by San James and produced by Elliot Maginot. The accompanying music video was directed by Gaelle Baumans.
The video stars Tania Lapointe-Dupont and Marilyse Senécal.
San James shared on social media, “I was going through a difficult period - where I was struggling with depression and anxiety - and I hadn't written a song in quite a while. I was in a pretty dark place and felt like I was dispossessed. Then, one day, on a subway ride to my apartment back from therapy, I started writing on my phone. The inspiration came suddenly. My fingers just kept writing and writing. A few days later, I had a song and I realized that it was the first time I'd ever written one that wasn't about love and relationships. It was about me. It moved me.”
She continued, “'Otherwise' is basically about telling someone - myself in this case, but not only - that it's perfectly OK to feel vulnerable and that hardship can be overcome... even thought it might not come easy. It's never a one-way ticket.
I would like people to feel like they are allowed to talk to one other when they're going through things - good or bad. There's no shame in asking for help or talking about mental health, for example. We're all human and we all have inner shadows. So this is me walking the talk.
I tried to tell that story without the song being sad or depressing. We just made positive it instead, and made it sound like something you almost can dance to; some sort of victory march. I wanted it to make people feel like even though it might not come easy, they got this. I hope it reaches you well.”
After the release of the song, San James released her self-titled EP in French on September 11th.
