American singer-songwriter Maren Morris released a cover of British-American singer-songwriter Billy Idol's “Dancing with Myself” on February 15, 2024.
The song is a celebration Singles Awareness Day, which is concocted by wireless carrier Visible - who “offer 'family plan savings' to single-line users - as a means to celebrate singlehood.
The original version of the song was released by British punk rock band Gen X in 1980. And the band frontman Billy Idol re-released the song as a solo artist in 1981.
The track was written by Billy Idol and Tony James. The cover version was produced by Gabe Simon.
The accompanying music video was directed by Mehdi Zollo, who shot inside Nashville's iconic Grimey's record store.
Maren Morris said of the song in a statement, “Recording and filming the music video for my cover of Billy Idol's 'Dancing with Myself' was such a dream come true and I hope fans can dance along while also knowing it's okay to be in your feelings. I am so excited to partner with a company like Visible who prioritizes self-empowerment and independence for their mobile plans.”- She continued, “'Dancing With Myself' to me is about enjoying the pleasure of your own company and celebrating that and not stigmatizing it, and being righteously selfish. I think that more people should do that; I think you exist better to your loved ones when you prioritize yourself.”
Billy Idol said, “I'm enjoying Maren's cover of Dancing with Myself ...great to see that song translates into so many genres ...she has a lovely feel and beautiful voice -BFI. Maren Morris dancing with myself because it's more fun. teamed up with Visible to celebrate independence with my version of 'Dancing with Myself.'” -
Recently, Maren Morris divorced her husband Ryan Hurd. She told Yahoo! Entertainment, “I'm in this new slate in life and I want to sort of lean into the vulnerability of the lyrics, because when I was [writing] them down, I don't know, it kind of struck this melancholic note and I feel like that's such a relatable theme to singleness.”
she added, “[Being single] is fun and you're really getting to know yourself, which is important because you are the longest relationship you'll have in your life so you need to tend to that one. But there's also, you know, moments of bittersweetness when you feel on those occasional nights a little lonely.”
