  • John Oates Covers Timmy Thomas' “Why Can't We Live Together”

  • American pop-rock duo Hall & Oates' John Oates released a cover of American R&B singer-songwriter Timmy Thomas' “Why Can't We Live Together” on March 17, 2023.

The song is the third single from his series of tracks that he will release each month, following “Disconnected” and Pushin' A Rock”.
The original version of the song was released by Timmy Thomas from his debut album of the same name in 1972. It was one of the first major hits to feature the use of a rhythm machine.
The track was written by Timmy Thomas. The cover version was produced by John Oates and David Kalmusky.
John Oates said of the song, “When thinking about the state of our world today I was reminded of the brilliant, classic 1970's anti-war anthem by Timmy Thomas. The original was a stark and powerfully beautiful recording using only a primitive drum machine and Hammond B3 organ to support his haunting vocal performance. I felt the time was right for me to cover this great song...but I wanted to reimagined in my own style with "doo wop" style background vocals, a live band and as a final touch a very 1970s electric sitar riff that I did at home to add a little more period sweetness.”
