Lana Del Rey Releases New Song “A&W”
American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey released a new song "A&W" from her upcoming ninth studio album “Did you know that there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd” on February 14, 2023.
The song is the second single off of the album, following the album title.
The original title of the song was “American Whore”, which refers to the roadside chain restaurant, and stands for “American Whore”.
It was written and produced by Del Rey and Jack Antonoff.
The song is composed of two halves. The first half is folk-oriented, prominently featuring acoustic guitar. The second half is trap-oriented, and contains an interpolation of the 1959 Little Anthony and the Imperials' "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop" and the title track of her 2019 album “Norman Fucking Rockwell”.
Lana Del Rey said in an interview with Billie Eilish on Interview Magazine, “I'd go on a seven-minute rant with a repetitive melody. It would be exactly what I was thinking about, mostly family and whether everything was going to pan out alright in the end.”
- She continued, “I had been reading so many articles that my father and I followed up on over the last ten years about the discovery of telomeres and the extinction of death and how we've always been edging towards this point in science where that would be a possibility. With my dad and my brother and sister all living together, that was on my mind.”
The new album contains 16-track, featuring guest appearances from Jon Batiste, SYML, Riopy, Father John Misty, Bleachers, and Tommy Genesis.
It is set to be release on March 24, 2023.
She told Billie Eilish about the album, “So much of this album is based on the concerns or hopes in my mind. With past stuff, I would talk about the garden of evil and good and bad, but I really was meeting some characters. Some of the people I was hanging out with, I found out later, were unsavory characters, and so they played a part in the writing.”
She added, “It's funny, this album felt totally effortless. When I did Norman Fucking Rockwell! it was about world-building, whereas this was straight vibing.”
