Ed Sheeran & Elton John Release New Christmas Song “Merry Christmas”
British singer-songwriters Ed Sheeran and Elton John teamed up to release a new Christmas song “Merry Christmas” on December3, 2021.
For Ed Sheeran, this marks his first original Christmas song. While, Elton John released “Step into Christmas” as a holiday song in 1973.
The track was written by Ed Sheeran and Elton John. Produced by Steve Mac.
Before the release of the song, Ed Sheeran told Jimmy Fallon, “In terms of doing a Christmas song, you need to chuck the kitchen sink at it... So I said to Elton, I was like, 'I don't really want to do a Christmas song unless we're going in. Unless it's like sleigh bells, ding-dong... It needs to be a proper Christmas song.'”
He continued, “So get this. We write it, and I title it 'Merry Christmas,' and I'm like, 'We're going to have to change that title 'cause there's probably loads of songs called "Merry Christmas."' I went on Spotify, and I typed in 'Merry Christmas,' nothing... There's not a song called "Merry Christmas." And then I went on YouTube and checked it out. Baffles me.”
The accompanying music video was directed by Jason Koenig.
In the clip, Ed Sheeran and Elton John paid homage to scenes from legacy No. 1 Christmas music videos and iconic Christmas films, like Wham!'s “Last Christmas”, the Snowman's “Walking in the Air” and more.
Also, Mr Blobby, Jonathan Ross, Big Narstie, Michael McIntyre and the Darkness appeared on the video as cameo.
All profits from this year's Christmas period will go to the Ed Sheeran Suffolk Music Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.- Q_yuO8UNGmY
