The track sampled iann dior's 2020 single “Holding On”.
The accompanying music video was directed by Lil Nas X and Psycho Films.
Lil Nas X shared on social media, “in the "sun goes down" video i go back in time to visit a younger version self who's struggling inside, hating himself, & doesn't want to live anymore. i try my best to uplift him. can't wait to share this song and video with you guys on friday. this one is really special to me.”
The debut album follows up the debut EP “7”, which was released in 2019.
He said, “With this album I've really stepped into my vulnerability, or like these things that I was insecure about people knowing about, or finding out about me. But with this, I felt very much comfortable, and I feel it's time to do this in my career, it's time to take that vision, where I'm able to show people another side to myself and what I deliver, you know?”
He continued, “This album exuberates confidence, creativity, just me completely stepping out of my comfort zone and saying whatever I want and giving my actual stories, giving my fans something to take from me. You know, 7 was cool, I love 7, it's great, but it wasn't personal enough and I feel like that's exactly what this album's gonna bring.”
