Sam Drysdale Releases New Song “Bonnie”
Canadian singer-songwriter Sam Drysdale released a new song “Bonnie” on January 19, 2024.
The song will appear on his upcoming EP “Bonnie's Sad Songs”, which is expected to be released in 2024.
The EP is his first project in two years since the 2022 EP “Testarossa”.
The track was written by Joseph Verschaetse and Sam Drysdale. Produced by VERSKOTZI.
Sam Drysdale said of the song, “This is the first song written for the upcoming EP titled Bonnie's Sad Songs and the song that shaped the whole project. I wrote the majority of "Bonnie" late at night while my girlfriend at the time was asleep and I remember not actually being able to sing it out loud because I didn't want to wake her up. I remember being excited to wake up the next morning so I could try out the melodies and see if they actually sounded good. I've been playing it live for friends around campfires for almost two years and I really owe it to them for giving me the confidence to put it out.”
- The song title is inspired by the 2019 film “The Highwaymen” directed by John Lee Hancock, starring Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson.
Sam Drysdale explained, “'Bonnie' came out of absolutely nowhere one night when I was thinking about this movie I had seen called The Highway Men about the two Texas Rangers that hunted Bonnie & Clyde. That film really highlighted Bonnie's role as the principal antagonist in their whole story and I loved the idea of writing a song from Clyde's perspective as he followed around this beautiful, evil woman that he loved. Even if it killed him.”
The accompanying music video was directed by The.97, who also created his previous video for “Love & Violence”.
Sam Drysdale said of the video, “The official music video for "Bonnie" is rooted in a very simple performance in a rural environment and directed by The.97, famous for hit work with many XO artists. By the end, you realize the main character is Clyde and that he has already died for the woman he loved.”
