Black Stone Cherry Covers Tina Turner's “What's Love Got To Do With It”
American rock band Black Stone Cherry, consisting of Chris Robertson (vocals/guitar), Ben Wells (guitar), John Fred Young (drums) and Steve Jewell Jr. (bass), released a cover of American singer-songwriter Tina Turner's “What's Love Got To Do With It” on June 6, 2023.
Tina Turner passed away peacefully at her home in Switzerland on May 24, 2023 at aged 83 after a long illness.
She suffered domestic violence throughout her marriage before she left Ike & Tina Turner in 1976 and started her solo career.
All proceeds of the cover version of the song will be donated to the organization for awareness of domestic violence.
Black Stone Cherry said, “Last June, we recorded a version of 'What's Love Got To Do With It' by the iconic Tina Turner. The intention was for it to be featured as a track on our new album. Tina touched so many souls, ours included. With her recent passing, we wanted to do something that honors her legacy and celebrates her fierceness. So we are proudly donating all proceeds from this recording to organizations for domestic violence awareness. Rest high Tina Turner.”
The original version of the song was released by Tina Turner from her fifth studio album “Private Dancer” in 1984.
The song received three awards at the 27th Annual Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Black Stone Cherry shared on their video, “About a year ago, we were over in the U.K. We were in London. We were hanging out at the Hard Rock Hotel doing our premiere for the 'Live From The Royal Albert Hall... Y'All'. We were hanging out in the lobby. I had walked through. And a song came on, and John-Fred [Young, drums] looked at Ben [Wells, guitar] and Steve [Jewell Jr., bass] and he goes, 'Man, we should do a version of this. Chris would absolutely kill it singing it.' We get back home. We get back on the bus and start touring and we start working on this song. And the song was 'What's Love Got To Do With It' by the iconic Tina Turner. And we did this really cool version of it last June, and we intended for it to be an additional track for [our upcoming] record. With the untimely passing of Tina, we thought that we would love to share this version with the world, and in doing so, we wanna do something really cool and honor Tina's legacy and we wanna donate all of our portion of the proceeds of this song to domestic violence awareness.
