  • The National Releases New Song “Weird Goodbyes” featuring Bon Iver

  • American rock band The National, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Bryan Devendorf (drums) and Scott Devendorf (bass), released a new song “Weird Goodbyes” on August 22, 2022.

This time, the band teamed up with American alt-folk band Bon Iver on the track. Also the track features the London Contemporary Orchestra.
It was written by Aaron Brooking Dessner and Matt Berninger. Produced by The National.
The song will appear on The National's upcoming ninth album, which is expected to be released in 2023.
Matt Berninger said, “It’s about letting go of the past and moving on, then later being overwhelmed by second thoughts.”
Aaron Dessner said, “'Weird Goodbyes' was one of the first new songs we made. I was misusing drum machines, as usual, and stumbled onto this beat that got stuck in my head — it felt like something only Bryan [Devendorf] could naturally play. We built the song around the beat. Matt’s melody and words felt so elegant and moving from the beginning — mourning a loss of innocence and motivation, holding onto memories and feelings that inevitably slip away and the grief we all suffer in weird goodbyes.”
He added, “I somehow could hear our friend Justin’s voice and heart in this song from the beginning. We sent it to him and it moved him—he then sang with Matt so powerfully.”
