English singer-songwriter Becky Hill covered Yazoo's 1982 “Only You” as Christmas song. She dropped a new music video for the song on December 6th.
“Only You” was released by English synth-pop duo Yazoo in 1982 as their debut single.
Several artists had covered the song, especially The Flying Pickets recorded an a capella cover of the song in 1983 which became Christmas number one in the UK.
In 2017, Selena Gomez covered the song on the soundtrack for 13 Reasons Why.
Becky Hill wrote on social media, “here’s a lil backstory as to why i chose to cover Only You this christmas... this year my grandad, one of my favourite male role models throughout my life, found out the cancer in his bladder had spread to his liver & that he had only a few weeks to live.
his first words were ‘one less at christmas then’ my grandad showed me the Flying Pickets version of Only You when i was a young girl, i remember hearing the harmonies & the arrangement in this song & always wanted to cover it since.
i’m sad he never got to hear it & this christmas won’t be the same without him. here’s to everyone who’s missing a vital part of their christmas this year, & for all the tables that have one less seat. hold on to the ones still sat with you, merry christmas”- source : Dansende Beren
