  • World Surf League: Tatiana Weston-Webb & Filipe Toledo Win Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro in Australia

  • World Surf League the Championship Tour the fourth stop, Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro took place at Margaret River, Western Australia between May 2 and 10, 2021.

Before the final day, John John Florence (HAW) announced that he has withdrawn from the remainder of the Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro and the upcoming Rip Curl Rottnest Search following an injury to his left knee.
He sustained the knee injury during his Round of 16 heat. “Unfortunately, I hurt my left knee on the end section of a wave during my round 16 heat two days ago,” said John John Florence. “I was able to surf the rest of my heat, just kind of feeling it out, but I knew something was off. It's not the same knee I dealt with last year so that's good, but with the Olympics coming up this summer I'm going to focus on healing up and getting strong.”
On Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro Women's, at four-to-six foot Main Break, Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) defeated Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) in the Final and took her first victory of 2021 season. It is her first victory since the 2016 Vans US Open of Surfing.
The result marks she moved up to 2nd in the world rankings. Even though, Carissa Moore (HAW) was defeated by Stephanie Gilmore in the Semifinal, she keeps 1st position in the rankings.

Tatiana Weston-Webb said, “I can't explain how incredible this feels. Steph is one of the best surfers of all time and was always someone I looked up to so much, so it was incredible to come up against her in a Final. You don't often get to surf against a seven-time WSL Champion so this feels amazing. I'm just thankful I took a win after a second-place finish at the last event.”
Tatiana Weston-Webb eliminated local hero Bronte Macaulay (AUS) in the Semifinals. But Bronte Macaulay recently lost her brother.
“I want to say that this win is for the Macaulay family," she said. “I came up against Bronte earlier today and seeing her show up for her heat was so brave. I can't imagine what she has been going through. They are an amazing family with so much love and are such a big part of surfing here in the West and my condolences are with them.”

Meanwhile, Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro Men's, both of Filipe Toledo (BRA) and Jordy Smith (ZAF) advanced to the Final for the first time this season.
Filipe Toledo defeated Jordy Smith with 17.40 points and claimed his first victory since the 2019 Oi Rio Pro. This marks he is now no.3 in the world, following Gabriel Medina of No. 1 and Italo Ferreira of No. 2.
“This has been a really fun week. There have been such amazing waves and amazing surfing from everybody so to come out on top feels so good. This one is for my son Koa, it's his birthday today and he asked me to win the trophy. I promised him I would and I could not break the promise, so this one's for you son, I love you. This win will be a huge jump on the rankings for me which I needed. This Tour is all about consistency and if you're not showing up in the Finals often, you won't make that Final 5, and that's my biggest goal for the year, to give myself that chance.”
