  • Gordi Releases New Song “Cutting Room Floor”

  • Australian indie-pop singer-songwriter Sophie Payten, aka Gordi released the fourth single “Cutting Room Floor” from her upcoming third studio album “Like Plasticine” on April 22, 2025.

The song received its first play during BBC Radio 1's Future Pop with Jodie Bryant.
The album is set to be released on August 8, 2025.
The track was written by Sophie Payten and Alex Lahey. Produced by Sophie Payten and Brad Cook.
Originally, she wrote the song at Phoenix Central Park in Sydney using a series of instrumental loops. And then, she completed the track with Brad Cook in Durham, North Carolina.
The accompanying music video was directed by Jared Frieder.

Gordi said of the song, “'Cutting Room Floor' is a song about growing pains, about the slow splintering that happens between people. I took the song to Durham in North Carolina to work on with my friend, Brad Cook. Matt McCaughan came over and played drums, and Brad and I filled in the rest. It was one of those songs that seemed to expand to fit any idea, and it was a real joy to work on. Jared Frieder and I shot the video in a carpark in Dallas as the sun was setting in the middle of a sweltering heatwave. I ate a whole pack of Twizzlers when we finished in an effort to abate my delirium.”
  • The new album comprises 12 songs, featuring a guest appearance from Anais Mitchell. It is her first album in five years since the 2020 album “Our Two Skins”.
Initially, the album was supposed to be released on May 30, 2025, but was pushed back to August 8, 2025.

Gordi said of the album, “Being surrounded by death made me think about how beautiful life is…. I thought about all the ways we are like plasticine in life - how forces we can’t control contort us into shapes, stretch us thin, and test our resilience. But sometimes, heart-wrenching change can be a thing of beauty. It was about making the music as undaunted as the stories within it.”

She added, “Also, album release date has been pushed back a lil bit. I’m sorry. Good things take time! Set the date for August 8. Promise it’ll be worth the wait. Genuinely didn’t mean to rhyme all of that but sentiment stands.”
