  • SOPHIE's Posthumous Self-Titled Album To Be Released In September, New Song “Reason Why” featuring Kim Petras & BC Kingdom Premieres on BBC Radio 1

  • The late Scottish music producer SOPHIE's self-titled second album will be released on September 27, 2024.

SOPHIE died in January 2021 after accidentally slipping and falling while watching the full moon in Athens, Greece.
When SOPHIE died, her new album was close to completion.
Three years later, the posthumous album was lovingly completed by those closest to her.

SOPHIE's family said of the album in a statement, “When we, Sophie's family, took our first steps towards bringing this project to fruition we contacted the dear friends with whom she envisioned the album. We wrote, 'We have been finding comfort in the music Sophie left us, it is a gift that we truly cherish as we try to find a way forward, with Sophie forever at the center of our worlds.' Sophie didn't often speak publicly of her private life, preferring to put everything she wanted to articulate in her music. It feels only right to share with the world the music she hoped to release, in the belief that we can all connect with her in this, the form she loved most.”
  • They continued, “This album has always told the story of Sophie's musical journey, a cacophony of skill and creative vision, eclipsing time and genre. Her unique sound world moves at an emotional level, encouraging the listener to intuitively embrace the ever-evolving landscape of light and dark, soft and hard, to the end of self-love and joyful self-acceptance. Emphasizing contradictions of sound and material, Sophie's work supersedes the pure aural to create the dimension she dreamed of.”

They added, “Now, it holds another poignant meaning, it tells a life story, from mysterious unknown, through wild clublands, to euphoric immateriality. Sophie gave all of herself to her music. It's here that she can always be found.”

  • From the album, the first single “Reason Why”, featuring German singer-songwriter Kim Petras and Los Angeles-based duo BC Kingdom, premiered on BBC Radio 1's New Music Show with Jack Saunders.
The track was written by Christopher Cummings, Eric Scoggins, Kim Petras, and Sophie Xeon. Produced by SOPHIE, Benny Long.

BC Kingdom told Jack Saunders about the song, “The track has been around for about five or six years. It literally is like a party record from scratch.”

Kim Petras said, “It was a very magical session. It was one of the first times I've ever met Sophie and I remember she came into the studio in a Matrix dress and like zipped up all bread like shredded tights and with this mono machine and kind of giving like mad scientist vibes and we just kind of the second we started working just came up with a bunch of ideas. It's amazing because we met back with Sophie's brother and sister Benny. And we listened to it after this long time and it was like Sophie was totally right. And I'm so happy we got to work together to Sophie and the song just always reminds me of a really magical time.”
