Grace VanderWaal Returns With New Song “Boyfriends”
American singer-songwriter Grace VanderWaal is back. She released a new song “Boyfriends” along with a music video on July 21, 2023.
The song is her first music in a year since the 2022 single “Lion's Den”.
She teased the song on Instagram live in 2020.
The track was written by Grace VanderWaal, Dan Gleyzer, and Rollo Spreckley. Produced by Dan Gleyzer.
The accompanying music video was directed by Blythe Thoma.
Grace VanderWaal shared on social media, “hi my piano literally broke in the middle of recording this. I wrote this song about feeling like you need to constantly perform for the people around you and not having those real intimate friendships you always see in the movies. I felt like I was treating everyone around me more like a boyfriend dynamic rather than a friend.”
She continued, “Me and Blythe Thoma made all these visuals with just a cam corder, some ken dolls, and a dream lol. So much fun I hope you all like the song! Thank you to the ladies who helped me put this all together♥️💪”- Grace VanderWaal first performed the song at the Purgatory in Brooklyn on July 7, 2023.
At that time, she said of the song, “The song doesn't really make sense. It's really catchy and cute. I kind of wrote it because I was thinking about the relationship you have with casual boyfriends. And it's kind of that surface-level emotional relationship, where you are never fully letting your guard down and you are tied up, even if it's a little subliminal, making sure that they are still enjoying their time with you. It's not like that REAL friend. And I was like – fuck, all the girlfriends I have are like boyfriend relationships, you know. They were so surface level, but I still felt the pressure to keep them around and keep them happy. There wasn't that sense of friendship vulnerability there.
