Haley Johnsen Releases New Song “Common Ground”
- Last month, Portland-based singer-songwriter Haley Johnsen released the first single of 2022 called “Higher”.
She has kept busy creating her music and released a new song “Common Ground” on May 6, 2022, following “Higher”.
The track was written by Haley Johnsen and Tim Karplus.
She has already filmed a music video for the song, which will be premiered this week.
She wrote the song in summer 2020. Haley Johnsen shared on social media, “'My intention in writing this song was to express my sadness and frustration with how much our communication has changed over the years, and at an even more accelerated rate during 2020. Not only was I at odds with others over important/controversial issues that the whole world was discussing, but I was watching it all happen in real time, on my phone, for way too many hours a day. Seeing people speak from their heart only to be harassed and flooded with anger and hate. I saw that so many people just stopped listening to each other, stopped actually researching, and the echo chambers grew louder and louder.”
- She continued, “Social media sliced right into our ability to have any trust or true civil discourse with each other and the algorithm only furthered the divide. Sitting here today in the midst of an attack on women’s rights makes me wonder how we will ever be able to see eye to eye with each other in this complex and emotional debate. Can we have the courage to have these conversations in real time, calmly, face to face, even though it’s frustrating and uncomfortable? ”
She said, “This song is not a virtue signal. I am far from knowledgable about the complexity of many issues and am still learning and guilty of not speaking up as much as I should. But I couldn’t help but express my heartbreak over how social media has been this weird blessing and addicting soul sucking curse at the same time. So all that to say, I just wanted to ask. Are you ok with this? Are we? How can we find common ground?”
