Last October, American singer-songwriter Tom Petty died at the age 66. After his death, his compilation album "An American Treasure" was released via Reprise Records on September 28th and features 63 songs, including the previously unreleased song “Gainesville.”
The album was remixed and remastered by Mike Campbell, Adria Petty, Dana Petty, Benmont Tench, and Ryan Ulyate.
On October 1st, a new music video for “Gainesville” was premiered online. Directed by photographer Brantley Gutierrez, the video features archival film of Petty in his early 1970s Gainesville days with select moments from throughout his career and newly-filmed footage of the singer’s Florida hometown.
The song was recorded during the Heartbreakers' 10th studio album "Echo" sessions in 1998.
“Echo is supposedly his dark album,” An American Treasure producer Ryan Ulyate said. “‘Gainesville’ is this guy who is looking back on this early life with some nostalgia for a simpler time. I love the song. It’s just great, but I can see how it didn’t necessarily fit the vibe of Echo.”- source : Rolling Stone
