The Sixth Stop on WSL Women's Championship, Vans US Open of Surfing kicked off at Huntington Beach in California on August 1st.
The event ran Round 1 an Round in four-to-five foot waves.
In Round 1, Johanne Defay (FRA) beat Carissa Moore (HAW) and Silvana Lima (BRA) with 9.00 points, which was the highest score of the day.
Defending champion Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), current yellow jersey Tyler Wright (AUS), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) received over 7.00 points and advanced to Round 3.
In Round 2, 6-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) was defeated by wild card Maud Le Car (FRA). Also, former this event champion Lakey Peterson (USA) left the event, early. She was eliminated by wild card Pauline Ado (FRA).
Silvana Lima (BRA) advanced to Round 3 with aggressive backhand ride, which was earned 7.17 points.
Maud Le Car said;
“I’m feeling super good and super grateful to be at this event, and just want to say thank you to Vans for this opportunity as a wildcard in the trials -- I’m so excited. Stephanie [Gilmore] is one of my favorite surfers and I watch her surf every time she’s on. She’s just really inspiring and love her surfing. I didn’t have any expectation and have nothing to lose so I’m just enjoying the opportunity, and just want to show a little bit of my surfing.”
