Searows Announces New Album “Death in the Business of Whaling”, Premieres New Song “Dearly Missed” on BBC Radio 1
American singer-songwriter Alec Duckart, aka Searows has announced his upcoming sophomore album “Death in the Business of Whaling” will be released on January 23, 2025.
It is his first album in four years since the 2022 debut album “Guard Dog”.
From the album, he premiered a new song “Dearly Missed” on BBC Radio 1's Future Artists with Sian Eleri.
The song is the first single off of the album. It was written by Alec Duckart and produced by Trevor Spencer.
The accompanying music video was directed by Karlee Boon.
Alec Duckart said of the song, “Dearly Missed is my contribution to the so-called 'good for her' horror genre. I'm an avid horror lover for many reasons, but I appreciate it in particular for the ability of the genre to explore societal issues without reading as too preachy. The reality of this world for marginalized people gets bleaker by the day and watching someone on screen who you can relate to fighting back and winning and taking back their dignity can be an extremely cathartic and empowering experience.”
He continued, “I wrote this song for the part of me that desires retribution for all the ways I and every marginalized person has been harmed and betrayed by society. I had a lot of fun writing this song and exploring a musical genre that I don't often write in, but enjoy listening to and I'm really looking forward to performing it live.”- Alec Duckart told Sian Eleri about the six-minute song, “I feel like there was a culmination of moments. I guess this was like a very different direction, like the way that I normally write songs. It's far less autobiographical, or just far less about me really. I sort of wanted it to be a story, but still use my own experiences and feelings.”
He continued, “I think that honestly happens a lot. I usually end up with six or seven or eight minutes song. But I cut down to be shorter. But sometimes I just leave it. I feel like, with this one, I felt like there was a plot that I was like, getting to something at the end. So I couldn't really cut anything down without losing something.” -
The album comprises 9 tracks, which he recorded with producer Trevor Spencer in a studio outside of Seattle.
It is the first time, she recorded the songs outside of his home studio.
He said of the album, “I feel like so much of my inspiration with lyrics and sounds in general comes from the animals and nature. And I feel like it's pretty easy to find in Oregon and Washington, like it was very easy to be inspired by those things.” - source : BBC Radio 1
