The Round 14 of MotoGP 2021, Gran Premio Octo di San Marino Grand Prix took place at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on September 18, 2021.
Before this event, Petronas Yamaha SRT announced that Andrea Dovizioso will join Petronas Yamaha Sepang Racing Team for the remainder of the 2021 season. Yamaha has also confirmed he will ride for their Independent Team in 2022.
Also, Yamaha revealed Franco Morbidelli is a Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team rider for the remainder of the 2021 season, as well as the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
In Qualifying, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Team) took back-to-back MotoGP poles with the lap record 1'31.065s, following Aragon GP.
This is Ducati's fourth Misano pole in MotoGP, with Casey Stoner in 2007 and 2008 and Jorge Lorenzo in 2018 the others.
Jack Miller (Ducati Team) qualified 2nd position. This is the first Ducati 1-2 in back-to-back MotoGP qualifying sessions since 2018, when it was three in a row from Silverstone to Aragon.
Fabio Quartararo (Monster Yamaha) qualified 3rd and starts from the front row for the 35th time.
Two Pramac Ducati riders, Jorge Martin and Johann Zarco were 4th and 5th, respectively. Pol Espargaro (Repsol Honda) was 6th as the highest-placed Honda.
Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) advanced to Q2 from Q1, but was 7th after crashing. It is his worst qualifying result in MotoGP at Misano.
Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Gresini) secured 10th for his second Aprilia appearance.
Franco Morbidelli (Monster Yamaha) qualified 16th for his first race as a factory Yamaha rider and his first since June's German GP.
The returning Andrea Dovizioso (Petronas Yamaha) was 24th.
Francesco Bagnaia said, “I'm very happy about today. One week ago we were in Aragon with a great, great feeling, and today is the same. It's been two weeks already where I started and everything is going so well because I found it very well with the bike, very comfortable and everything is okay. In the wet, in FP2 I was feeling great. Last time we rode in the wet I was struggling a bit more in the first part of the sessions but not yesterday, so, we are ready and we're prepared for all conditions. The FP4 was great also and I prefer dry for sure. Wet is more critical and it's easier to make mistakes. Also, this track does not have a great level of grip, so it's better to have dry. I know that in the wet we have more opportunities to close the gap, but I think 53 points is still a lot and I just have to continue gaining points to Fabio [Quartararo].”
