  • Jessie Murph Releases Debut Album “That Ain't No Man That's The Devil”

  • American singer-songwriter Jessie Murph released her debut album “That Ain't No Man That's The Devil” on September 6, 2024.

The album comprises 12-track, featuring collaborations with Teddy Swims, Jelly Roll, Koe Wetzel, and Bailey Zimmerman.
Produced by Ben Maddahi, Bēkon, Carrie K, Chakra, Feenom, Gabe Simon, Jeff 'Gitty' Gitelman, Josh Serrato, OAK, Pete G, Peter Gonzales, Sergiu Gherman and Stuart Johnson.
She recorded the album during the second half of last year and into this year. But she wrote most of these songs in a week.
On the album, she is inspired by the late Amy Winehouse and blends country, soul, pop and folk.

Jessie Murph told UPROXX about the album, “I think my whole life I've been very inspired by her (Amy Winehouse). I've been letting the soul side of me, which is stuff I love so much, come out and flourish, especially on this album. With this album, the creative process was a little different. I would go in the studio, and everybody would just be on instruments and somebody would hand me a mic. I would just kind of get to freestyle these melodies and most of these lyrics, which is really sick and something that I found so freeing. Being able to go and just freestyle, most of it was so therapeutic and good. I could just sing whatever melodies I wanted, and they would just come out, and I wouldn't really have to talk about it, which was so nice.”
  • Jessie Murph said of the album, “I fucking love yall with my whole entire heart and soul, thank you for listening, for caring and for giving me purpose, I hope this album makes you feel something, I put absolutely all of me into it and i will forever be proud of it, I am gonna finish eating my sushi and cry about this.”

  • Jessie Murph explained about some tracks for the album.

    “Dirty” with Teddy Swims
“When someone fucks you over do you wallow and feel sorry for yourself? Or do you make them sorry for what they did?
I was so excited when he wanted to jump on the song and he did not disappoint. His voice is absolutely incredible and he's also just the best guy. We had a lot of fun working on this together.”

    “Son of a Bitch”
“'Son of a Bitch' is the start of a new era of Jessie Murph. The music that is coming is coming directly from my soul and I could not be prouder and more excited for what's to come.”

“Wild Ones” with Jelly Roll via Billboard
“It was such a long process. I feel like I made it months before it came out, and I never planned on having a feature on it. I was just going to put it out. But [at the] last minute, Jelly heard it and he was like, 'I have a verse for this,' and I'm a huge fan of him. I went to one of his shows and sang a cover of “Simple Man” with him. Then I guess he heard “Wild Ones” and I was like, “Oh my God, please be on this.”
I've always been attracted to crazy things or chaos. That's where the song came from. I don't normally write fun songs, so it's one of my first songs like that - really cool and different. I had been in a session all day and we had gotten nothing. In the last 30 minutes, I remember Gitty [producer/co-writer Jeff Gitelman] played this guitar lick and we ended up writing it super fast.
We might've sped it up during the process to make it a little bit more groovy. But I really wanted country elements for this song — that was the palette I wanted to stay with. Stylistically, especially lately, I've been a little bit country leaning. I'm really inspired by country music, and I feel like it has found its way into my sound.”

    “High Road” with Koe Wetzel
“We went back on a past relationship that I had had a while back. And we just deep-dove into every detail of what would happen whenever we'd fight. And I would go back on past experiences of a certain fight or how I would react to it. Sometimes, I would be there. I'd be like, 'Hey, if we're going to do it, we're going to lay it out there. Let's do it.' And then other times, I'd be like, 'You know what? I'm going to let you chill out, and then I'm out of here.' So, I don't know. We just went around and around and nailed out all the details. And then this was another song that pretty much wrote itself pretty quick.”
