  • World Surf League: Women's Championship Tour #1 Roxy Pro Gold Coast Kicks Off

  • The first stop of WSL Women's Championship, Roxy Pro Gold Coast kicked off at Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia on March 14, 2017.

This is the open event of World Surf League 2017. Waves were in two-to three foot (0.5 - 1 metre), too small.
Before starting the event, The World Surf League has announced a partnership with Visa as the official payment partner of the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, the first stop on the 2017 WSL Championship Tour.
Chief Commercial Officer at WSL, Mark Noonan stated, "We are thrilled to welcome Visa, one of the most iconic brands in the world, to the WSL partner family. We look forward to working with them to showcase their innovative payment technologies to our fans at the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast and those watching the live global broadcast."

Round 1, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW), Nikki Van Dijk (AUS), Courtney Conlogue (USA), Carissa Moore (HAW) and Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) advanced directly to Round 3.
On Heat 3, Defending Champion of this event and current World Champion Tyler Wright (ASU) was defeated by Nikki Van Dijk (AUS). Tyler Wright caught many waves on the heat, but she could not earn high score. She moved on to elimination Round 2.
Also, Silvana Lima (BRA) came back to world tour from this event.

After Heat 6, Nikki Van Dijk said,
"I knew that I just had to start it off with a banger. Start strong and then back it up and build from there. Sure, it feels good to beat a current World Champ, but it just felt like a sponsor trip session with her or something. Those blue bottles are nasty, though. You literally have to grab them off of you while they're stinging you to get them off. But if that's the worst of them, then I'm not complaining."

Roxy Pro Gold Coast Round 1 Results:
Heat 1: Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) 14.80, Keely Andrew (AUS) 13.33, Johanne Defay (FRA) 10.57
Heat 2: Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW) 13.43, Sage Erickson (USA) 9.70, Bronte Macaulay (AUS) 7.93
