Tom Odell Releases New Song “Black Friday”
British singer-songwriter Tom Odell released a new song “Black Friday” on September 22, 2023.
The song is the follow-up to the collaborative song “Butterflies” with Norwegian singer-songwriter AURORA, which was released back in January.
But as single, it is the third single of 2023, following “Streets Of Heaven” released from his 2021 album “monsters” last month.
The track was written by Tom Odell, Laurie Blundell, and Max Clilverd. Produced by Tom Odell and Cityfall.
The accompanying music video was directed by Lucca Lutzky.
The song is self-deprecating, with him comparing his appearance to his girlfriend's friend. He sings “I wanna better body, O want better skin, I wanna be perfect like all your other friends”
Tom Odell said of the song, “I wrote this song on my birthday last year, which happened to be the day before 'Black Friday.' The song is inspired by my admiration and love for the people in my life, but also my proclivity to be unkind to myself. It's a love song, I think, and I'm very proud of it, and I hope people like it.”
The previous single “Streets Of Heaven” is about a school shooting in America.
Tom Odell told Apple Music about the song, “'streets of heaven' is about a school shooting, written from the perspective of someone that was killed. Obviously it's an incredibly delicate subject of which I have no experience, but I try to remain nonjudgmental and empathize and imagine what that must be like. I really hope that people don't think I'm meddling in things that I don't need to, but I think as an artist I always have the right to empathize and observe.”
