  • Mahalia Premieres New Song “Cheat” featuring JoJo on BBC Radio 1

  • British singer-songwriter Mahalia teamed up with American singer-songwriter JoJo to premiere a new song “Cheat” on BBC Radio 1's Future Sounds with Clara Amfo.

The song is the second single off of Mahalia's upcoming sophomore album “IRL”, following “Terms and Conditions”.
The track was written by Joanna Noelle Levesque, Ryan Ashley, Spencer Stewart, and Uzoechi Emenike (MNEK). Produced by JD Reid.
Mahalia told Clara Amfo about the song, “It's funny because this song was written, the first part of it was written by MNEK and Ryan Ashley. And MNEK sent me this song and as we know MNEK is a God when it comes to this. And that hook I did not get out of my head for weeks. And I think obviously I've like talked about this stuff before. Joe also know you have like I felt that we always touch on the subject of cheating but to kind of go in so blatantly and clearly with just once a cheat, always a cheat. I think this felt like the perfect inclusion, and then I got the track to Joe. And it was Joe who wrote the bridge and it all just came together really beautifully and really organically.”
JoJo added, “I couldn't get the melodies and lyrics out of my head either. So which to me I'm like this resonates, it hits a little too close to home. And also these phrases that we've heard for a long time we hear them for a reason.”

  • Mahalia continued, “So this was probably around the time that like I kind of finished writing. and I knew that I wanted Joe. it just took me a little while to like find the guts to do it but then I did I think I am definitely scared of rejection, but also it's just like it's respectfully. It's Joe Joe. I don't know how to send this message. But then if I remember right, I hit you on Instagram. We like had a couple back and forth, and then we were voice noting over email which is very professional. Honestly, it happened really quick. And for me anyway really organically.”
The accompanying music video was directed by Boma Iluma.
Mahalia said, “We made the video last week and we were definitely teaching the whole day singing laughing chatting.”

  • The new album is set to be released on July 14, 2023. It is her first body of work in four years since the 2019 debut album “Love and Compromise”.
Mahalia said of the album, “This is a real reflection of the journeys I've had, what actually happened and a celebration of everyone who got me there. There are names and family members I mention because it all helped in shaping who I am. I'm so proud of this album, and so proud of how much I challenged myself to just let those stories out.”
