  • Sydney Mae Returns With New Song “Not the Only One”

  • Toronto-based singer-songwriter Sydney Mae returned with a new song “Not the Only One” on January 13, 2023.

The song is her first music in two years since the 2021 singles “Lucky Am I” and “Feet First”.
She wrote the song with Nancy Laberge. Produced by Bess Rogers.
“My co-writer, Nancy Laberge, and I wrote this song at a time when I was neglecting my own experiences and emotions by putting the most importance solely on validating and supporting others,” Sydney Mae said of the song. “Within this particular relationship, I found that pouring all of my energy into someone else robbed me of any resolution for myself, which produced emotional build-ups and a wave of anxiety I didn’t know what to do with.”
She continued, “'Not the Only One' is the first clear sign of a full shift in my career to a new pop chapter, ‘look,’ and sound that I’m happily cozying into! I finally feel like I’ve been able to take the time to create my own little world to move around in and finally experiment freely. I can’t wait for my fans to get to know me again.”
  • She explained of the song, “'This battered soul, this letting go, can’t let it show / Would barely recognize myself / So I’ll lose my mind, maybe in time, I’ll realize / It couldn’t have been helped / What we lost and what it cost, we watched it all burn / Nothin’ I could do to pull us through, you’re not the only one that hurts'. This is the only part of the song where I’m talking directly inward, focusing on a very intimate moment of understanding for myself. Writing these lines marked a turning point when I realized that the bottom line was that there was nothing I could’ve done to champion us through it. It wasn’t actually ‘on me’ to carry the emotional weight of the end of a one-sided relationship.”
