VENNA Releases New Song “Melancholia”
- Canadian alt-pop singer-songwriter VENNA released the fourth single of 2022 called “Melancholia” on September 16, 2022.
She wrote the song that emulates the beginning of an abusive relationship. The seduction, the progression into obsession, into possessiveness and manipulation, all wrapped up in a dynamic track that mirrors the emotional highs and lows.
The lyrics were born from a place of self-deprecation, and although Venna is not in any way the abusive, possessive partner that this narrator is, they developed from a very personal concern of hers.
Pulling inspiration from classic poets, fantasy literature, and countless powerful women bringing alt-pop to the mainstream, her music serves to provoke thought and emotion.
- “With 'Melancholia,' I tried to emulate the beginning of an abusive relationship. The seduction, the progression into obsession, into possessiveness and manipulation, all wrapped up in a dynamic track meant to mirror the emotional highs and lows,” VENNA said of the song. “I’ve often worried that my issues with mental health could be incredibly draining for my partner and that maybe it is inconsiderate to lean on them at all. These lyrics were born from a place of self-deprecation and developed from a very personal concern.”
She continued, “Listeners should feel uncomfortable listening to this, recognizing that the controlling nature we romanticize in the media is actually incredibly harmful and can be very dangerous.”
